Vintage Noel Blue Australian Studio Pottery Vase with Loop Handle, 35cm

A beautiful and highly distinctive piece of Australian studio pottery by Noel Blue, featuring his signature sculptural form, warm terracotta finish and hand-applied abstract decoration.

Standing approximately 35cm high and 21cm wide, this substantial vase has an unusual flared rim and sculptural loop handle, with organic circular forms and flowing hand-applied decoration across the body.

The vase is incised “Noel Blue” to the base and, wonderfully, it also comes with an original Noel Blue care and information leaflet, which was found inside the vase. The leaflet describes the pieces as individually shaped in “free art form” and identifies the range as Noel Blue handmade Australian pottery.

Noel Blue was a NSW studio potter who apprenticed at Studio Dybka-Tichy in Parramatta during the 1970s. When the studio closed in the early 1980s, Noel Blue and other potters established their own studios, continuing to work with terracotta clays and dipped and trailed decoration.

This particular piece has the earthy, organic qualities associated with Noel Blue's work and is a wonderful example of Australian studio pottery from the circa 1970s–early 1980s period.
